So far as I can tell, they use the eleven letters and numbers in the following format: XX#XX###### I'm sure that the last six digits are the run numbers. But can anyone provide some clarity to the first 5 letters/numbers? What would an HN2GF####### serial number mean? Nobody knows? I don't recall if anyone's said what the HN means (I suspect it is probably something to do with the model of camera body or lens that it sits upon) and the F in your example may well be something like the particular factory it was produced in, or vice versa (but both of these are educated guesses). However, I do know/remember what the third and fourth digits signify.
The 2 in your example means 2012 (2013 would be 3 and so on) and the G means July, in an A=January to L=December sequence. Signifying date of manufacture, as you have already realised, I expect. Much appreciated response. RichRMA wrote: I thought this mattered only with cameras that aren't mass-produced? Generally it doesn't matter. It is only helpful when there are issues with introductory runs, or issued that were addressed later. The Fuji X100 was such a camera. It had sticky aperture blades that were addressed starting in the 2012 production runs (I believe - this is from memory - may have been late 2011). At any rate, the serial number was helpful in determining if the camera had the potential for this problem, or if they had already addressed it in manufacturing.
Touchscreen model means you can use your fingertip, but with a tablet digitizer you must have a special stylus pen. If you are not sure contact us with your full model # and we will tell you which recovery media you need.
Also If you want to see the original factory specs of your unit, you can enter the full model # on the PANASONIC TOUGHBOOK CONFIGURATOR website. This is also a handy tool if you are considering buying a Toughbook, since some sellers may not be sure of the specs and you can confirm them this way.
