The size of the truck is just as important as the size of the motor in regards to gas milage. If you are looking at a mini truck (colorado/s10/tacoma) then a v6 is plenty.
If you are getting a larger truck like a silverado, f-150, or a 1500 ram then a v8 would be more to your liking since a v6 can get it going. But it would require more effort to do so. Also, are you looking at brand spanking new or an older rig? The newer v6's have lots of HP compared to the older v6's.
They even have more HP than a v8 of older models, but less torque.
