With the Absolute Best collections out of print at the end of the '90s and the 20 Good Vibrations: The Greatest Hits missing about as many great singles as it included, Capitol's release of two generous Beach Boys Greatest Hits discs in 1999 was welcome.

Beach Boys Greatest Hits Zip

6/28/17 EDIT: After the immense success of the Endless Summer and Spirit of America albums compiled by Capitol Records, the Beach Boys and their current label, Reprise Records, decided to release their own compilation album to the public. The album, entitled Good Vibrations: Best of the Beach Boys, was released on June 30th, 1975 and reached #25 in the US, a much lesser success than the two Capitol albums. Those two were just so much more attractive: beautiful cover art, a double album worth of material, a gate-fold opening with collages of photos. The two Capitol albums just gave the public a better bang for their buck.

However, the Reprise album definitely beat the Capitol albums in terms of quality. While Endless Summer and Spirit of America featured almost nothing but hits from 1962 to 1965, the Good Vibrations album focused on some of the group's better, newer material spanning from 1966 to 1973. Overall, while looking at this album, I couldn't find that much at all to change about the track listing. So, this alternate album instead features all of my original mixes for these songs. Side A begins with 'Sail On, Sailor' from the Holland album from 1973. Nothing for me to change there at all.

Same goes for 'Sloop John B' off of Pet Sounds. Then comes 'God Only Knows', also from Pet Sounds. This mix is the same one used on my previous albums, it sounds great! After that comes 'Darlin' from the 1967 album Wild Honey.

My previous mix of the song is used again, which features an extended instrumental section and an actual ending as opposed to a fade-out. The beautiful 'Add Some Music to Your Day' comes next, sourced from the Sunflower album from 1970. Side A closes with the classic 'Wouldn't it Be Nice' from Pet Sounds. This version of the song is sourced from the 1997 Pet Sounds Sessions album, which features Brian on lead vocals for the bridge, as opposed to Mike.

Side B opens with 'Good Vibrations', heard here in it's original single mix from the 2012 stereo remaster of Smiley Smile. Then comes my alternate, extended mix of 'Do it Again', originally released on 1969's 20/20 album. Fanuc tp editor software. My extended mix of 'Caroline, No', from Pet Sounds follows, of which was made by carefully synching the instrumental track to the a cappella vocals. The 1968 track 'Friends' comes next, not surprisingly from the fantastic 1968 album of the same name. After that comes the 1971 mix of 'Surf's Up', heard on the fantastic album of the same name. The album closes out with my great-sounding mix of 'Heroes and Villains' from the SMiLE album, retaining the coda as opposed to my mixes on SMiLE and Endless Summer. Overall, while not much to say about the album, it certainly does include quite a number of good sings.

I definitely don't have a lot to talk about with this album, but I certainly can't wait to get to the next album, the Beach Boys' 1976 grand comeback album. Will it be a 15-track album comprised mainly of covers? I sure do hope not! Sail On, Sailor (Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Jack Rieley) 2.
